Marbled Forest Gecko

Specimen searching amongst forest floor leaf litter, Singapore.

Specimen from Fraser's Hill, Peninsular Malaysia.

On a slender branch, overhanging freshwater swamp forest, Singapore.

Family : GEKKONIDAE
Species : Cyrtodactylus quadrivirgatus
Size (snout to vent) : 7 cm
Size (total length) : 15 cm

References : H1, H2, H3

This attractive, nocturnal gecko of lowland primary rainforest or disturbed secondary forests is not uncommon, but sightings are by no means frequent.

It has slender digits which lack expanded pads : the fingers and toes are well adapted for gripping on fissured tree bark or other rough surfaces. The reddish-brown eyes have vertical pupils. These are both distinguishing feature of Cyrtodactylus geckos.

The body colour is medium brown, pale cream or pale grey, patterned with four buff or dark brown lateral stripes : these may be semi-continuous or completely broken into irregular blotches.  Specimens may either appear pale and insipid, or strongly patterned (as in the example shown here). The tail is patterned with dark and light bands of roughly equal thickness. The dorsal colour is pale.

The species ranges from southern Thailand, through Peninsular Malaysia to Singapore. It is also listed as occurring in north Sumatra and north-western Borneo.
