This is an attractive, pelagic species of larger streams and rivers, which is able to tolerate variable water conditions.

Reaching a maximum of 26 cm in length, it can be identified by the single, dark lateral row of spots along the flank which merge and thicken posteriorly into a thick black band which extends along the upper lobe of the forked tail fin. A narrower, unconnected dark band runs along the lower lobe of the tail fin. The eye is large.

Its diet probably comprises insects which have fallen into the stream or river, as well as small aquatic vertebrates and possibly  other organic detritus.

The Apollo Shark-minnow ranges from Indochina through Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. It is also listed as occurring in localised parts of Borneo.
