| Kota Kinabalu:
Sabah is the only State to have successfully implemented the
Community-Based Riverine Fisheries Management (popularly called the Tagal
System).
Disclosing this here, Sabah Fisheries Director Rayner Datuk Stuel Galid said Sabah currently recorded 176 Tagals, namely in the districts of Penampang, Tambunan, Keningau, Tuaran, Kota Belud, Ranau, Kota Marudu, Tongod and Nabawan. In this respect, the first-ever Colloquium on the Tagal System is being organised by the State Fisheries Department, at Beverly Hotel, in Karamunsing here, on Nov 25. The objectives are: l To highlight the status of the Tagal System in Sabah; and l To discuss and share experiences on the problems face by the various Tagal Committes in the State and successes and to tap new ideas towards improvement; The feedback would help the State Fisheries Department to formulate new strategies to improve the Tagal System in terms of good management, regulations, research, and capacity building, among others, for the benefit of the rural communities and the state fisheries industry in general. According to Rayner, nine working papers would be presented by speakers from the Fisheries Department, Drainage and Irrigation Department, Wildlife Department and the chairmen of Tagal communities from various districts in Sabah. The one-day colloquium is expected to be attended by 100 participants, comprising officers from the relevant departments, native chiefs, Tagal community chairmen, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and relevant non-governmental organisations. |
