Department to study level of pollution of Johor rivers

JOHOR BARU: The state Environment Department has embarked on a major project to study and detect pollutions in most major rivers in Johor.

Its director Tengku Bakry Shah Tengku Johan said the project was to compile the necessary data on polluted rivers before outlining a comprehensive clean-up plan.

“We are studying the cause and level of pollution in Sungai Seget, Sungai Skudai and Sungai Tebrau near here,” he said.

Tengku Bakry said the department was also conducting studies on other rivers, especially those which are sources of water supply.

He said the department hope to complete the studies by next month and submit a report to the state government.

To a question, Tengku Bakry said it was difficult to educate the public on the dangers of polluting the waterways but would continue to organise awareness campaign in Johor.

“We have outlined several awareness campaigns to get the public not to dump garbage into the rivers.

“Without such commitment from the people, we are afraid those polluted rivers will remain polluted.”
