| Malaysia wants further study on Singapore land reclamation |

KOTA TINGGI - Malaysia
will seek the help of international maritime experts to conduct further
studies on the effects of reclamation work being carried out by Singapore
around Pulau Tekong in the Johor Straits, said Foreign Minister Syed Hamid
Albar. The matter needed careful study, The New Sunday Times and The Sunday Star quoted him as saying on Saturday. 'We have the right to raise concerns about the matter and we will see what could be done under international law as it involves the environment of a neighbouring country,' he told reporters. 'We have already given Singapore documented evidence that the project is damaging the environment, especially along the coast of Johor, but so far it has not stopped the reclamation work.' Malaysian officials have complained to the Republic on earlier occasions that the reclamation work could restrict the flow of water through the straits and affect shipping lanes. They have also said they are worried about its possible impact on the environment and that it is encroaching on disputed territory being contested by both countries. Singapore has refuted the claims. Datuk Seri Syed Hamid also said on Saturday that the issue has not affected the relationship between the two countries in other areas. 'Although we have different opinions on the project, I am confident the matter will be resolved without any ill feelings by both parties.' Meanwhile, the Malaysian government has also found itself being criticised over sand dredging work for the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP). Local newspapers had reported earlier
this month that hundreds of Johor fishermen had demanded compensation from
the authorities, charging that sand-dredging work in the sea near Desaru
and Muar was threatening their livelihood. |
