LAND RECLAMATION AT PULAU
TEKONG First studies 'show adverse effects' |
| Malaysia says its study backs claims that the ecology is under threat |
| KOTA TINGGI -
Malaysia has submitted to Singapore the preliminary results of a study on
land reclamation carried out by the Republic and will follow it up with a
full report soon, Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar has said.
The report showed that land reclamation around Pulau Tekong was affecting Malaysia negatively and this included the environment and ecology, he said. 'Malaysia will further submit to Singapore the outcome of the scientific study carried out to support our claim,' he told reporters after a Hari Raya open house at his residence. He was responding to a question on the continued reclamation works by Singapore although Malaysia had already sent a protest note in October. 'We have sent our note to tell them that they should stop but of course Singapore has continued...using the basis that it's within their territory,' he said. Datuk Syed Hamid said it might be within Singapore's territory but Malaysia, as its closest neighbour geographically, would like the Republic to take note of the adverse effects of the reclamation works on this country. 'We will be submitting the complete findings and at the same time we will look into our next possible action in order to ensure protection of Malaysian interests,' he added. Regarding negotiations on the rates for raw water he said Malaysia was not interested in any further negotiations with Singapore until there was clear intention on the Republic's part to find a solution. 'I have no plans to hold a meeting in the near future...I'm more interested to see how it can be resolved according to the law and according to Malaysia's interest as the owner of the land for the pipeline and the water supplied to Singapore,' he said.-- Bernama
