Govt expands
Yok Don National Park
DAC LAC — Prime Minister Phan Van Khai delivered a reassuring signal to environmentalists, following his decision to expand Yok Don National Park in an effort to preserve animal and plant biodiveristy. The park, located in the Central Highland province of Dac Lac, is also being improved to help develop eco-tourism in the area. Yok Don presently covers 115,545ha, which are subdivided into four communes: Krong Na, Ea Bung, Chu M’Lanh and Ea Po. The park is surrounded by a 133,890ha buffer zone of neighbouring communes. Yok Don is the country’s second national park to receive government funding this year, after U Minh Thuong Park in Kien Giang Province’s Vinh Thuan District. U Minh Thuong is smaller than Yok Don, covering only 8,053ha. Several important ecological restoration zones and historic preservation sites are located inside the park, which is surrounded by a 13,000ha buffer zone. — VNS
