Europe offers new aid to Pu Mat park

HA NOI — The European Commission is to extend a project to protect forests in the Pu Mat National Park, in central Nghe An Province, by 18 months.

The forestry and nature conservation project in Nghe An has been running since 1997 and is aimed at reducing destruction and degradation of forestry in the Pu Mat National Park and its buffer zone.

The park, upgraded from nature reserve status by the Prime Minister last November, is home to rare – and scientists think possibly unique – fauna and flora.

The project extension, to December 2004, plans to strengthen conservation and management of the Park and its immediate area.

The European Community has backed several forestry and natural resources projects in Viet Nam’s northern provinces of Son La, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, and Bac Can, the central province of Nghe An, the central highland province of Kon Tum and the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of An Giang.

It’s average annual aid to Viet Nam’s forestry sector is around US$4.5 million. — VNS
