Cat Tien
joins world biosphere network
HA NOI — Viet Nam’s second biosphere reserve is now official. On Thursday, Cat Tien National Park celebrated its certification as one by UNESCO. The Can Gio mangrove forest had the honour of being declared Viet Nam’s first reserve in 2000. Cat Tien became the 411th reserve in the world when it got UNESCO recognition last November, and following its new-found status, became a link in a global biosphere reserve network. It will now find it easier to develop exchanges within that network. Tran Van Mui, director of the national park, said that a management board would have to be set up to conform to regulations laid down under UNESCO Viet Nam’s Man and the Biosphere Programme; it will comprise of members from Cat Tien National Park besides local representatives. The Park will aim at completing the management and natural resource reserve programme, contributing to a stable life for the community, promoting and protecting local culture and promoting environmental training and education. — VNS
