HA NOI — A national seminar has met to discuss the fishing industry, and how it can achieve sustainable development whilst facing an ever-increasing demand for output. The seminar, held in Ha Noi this week was a precursor to a millennium conference on Sustainable Fisheries and Fish for the People to be held in Thailand this November. The main aims of this meeting are to discuss the current state of the fisheries, the continued exploitation of aquaculture, and new processing methods which would enable the development of the fisheries sector. The seminar also proposed to establish greater communication between representatives of different fisheries, from the industrial sector, non-governmental organisations and small-scaled fisheries, with a view to raising concerns and establishing strategies within a national framework, which could then be proposed at the Millennium Conference. It is hoped that promoting shared knowledge between the various sectors of the industry will prove beneficial to all and lead to greater productivity while also providing an opportunity to encourage co-operation between the various nations in the region. The consumption of aquaculture products is on the increase, and even though technology is being updated, the fisheries are under pressure to avoid over-exploitation of certain areas. Therefore, it is essential for the sector to find practical and sustainable development and management policies. The industry has made a significant contribution to the national economic growth, and helped in the combating of hunger and poverty. However, the sector must devise ways to cope with these new challenges, as it is estimated that the amount of fish and related products will remain at a consistent level, despite the excess demand. — VNS
