ADB canvasses opinions on environment policy

HA NOI — The Asian Development Bank on Friday held a meeting in Ha Noi to discuss a new environment policy that will not only guide its activities, but will also be an advocacy tool for "facilitating necessary changes to policy and for reform."

The meeting is part of the process through which the ADB is consulting the diverse group of stakeholders from its member countries to receive their suggestions on the proposed policy, said John Samy, the bank’s resident representative in Viet Nam..

Attending the meeting were 35 representatives of Government agencies, national research centres, international organisations and non-governmental organisations.

The ADB says its new policy will strive to ensure that environmental resources on which the poor depend for their livelihoods are conserved; integrate environmental objectives into the economic development process; bring about institutional changes; and ensure accelerated flow of resources for environmental improvement.

The bank addresses environmental protection and conservation needs of developing countries by integrating these considerations into its regional, country and project-level operations.

As the foundation of its environment policy, the bank says it has developed a set of principles, which provide the overall rationale for alleviating poverty, protecting the environment, addressing gender issues, and promoting economic growth. — VNS
