Benefits of govt’s rural clean water project start to flow in

HA NOI — An increasing number of rural residents are benefiting from clean water, as the Government’s environmental hygiene programme grows.

Residents in Yen Bai Town in the northern mountainous province of the same name put the first phase of a VND67.15 billion (US$4.6 million) clean water project into operation recently.

The project, in Yen Binh Township, will serve domestic consumption and agricultural production.

State funds bankrolled VND17.15 billion worth, with the remainder loaned from French official development assistance (ODA).

After two years of construction, the first phase was completed thanks to VND16.2 billion raised from domestic sources and facilities from France.

The mountainous Khanh Son District in the central province of Khanh Hoa has poured VND7 billion into building a 1,000cu.m clean water supply system in To Hap Township.

The project, slated for completion by the end of the year, is the largest ever built in this mountainous region.

The central province of Binh Dinh is preparing to put the Suoi Phuong clean water project into operation by the end of this month.

Most of the key items in the VND1.9 billion project have been completed, including the pipes and 20 tanks.

It will provide clean water for 13,700 residents in the three mountainous communes of Canh Thuan, Canh Hiep and Canh Hien in Van Canh District.

In the northern midland Phu Tho Province, initial work has been completed for a water supplying company in Viet Tri Town.

The US$13.6 million cost is on loan from German ODA funds.

The company will help provide local residents with 150-200 litres of water per capita daily in urban areas and 25-50 litres for outlying residents.

Meanwhile, the northern province of Nam Dinh’s clean water supplying company has invested VND3 billion to install water pipes connecting every household.

The company has also upgraded and repaired machines, facilities and tanks. — VNS
