  Central Highlands to build reservoir

DAC LAC — Construction work kicked off last Saturday on the second-biggest reservoir in the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) region, located in Dac Lac Province’s border district of Ea Sup.

The reservoir will be 146 million cu.m in size, second only to the A Zun Ha dam in Gia Lai Province, and boasts total capital investment of VND355 billion from the State budget.

Construction is expected to finish by 2003, and the reservoir should help develop a comprehensive agricultural industry in the area.

It will help transform a section of poor dry open forest of Dipterocarps into more than 8,000ha of wet rice, while reducing floods from the many streams and rivers in the lower section of the Cuu Long(Mekong) River basin’s source.

These benefits should help the border region develop its economy as well as ensure its security.

Attending the ground-breaking ceremony was the First Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Van Dang, who is also member of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Central Committee. — VNS
