Danish govt
backs Nghe An waste management project
HA NOI — Denmark has selected the central province of Nghe An for funding assistance in managing solid waste. An agreement to provide Nghe An with a grant of 19.8 million Danish Kroner (US$2.4 million) was being signed on Friday by Deputy Planning and Investment Minister Vo Hong Phuc and the Danish Ambassador to Viet Nam Ove Ullerup. The project is aimed to develop sustainable waste management in the central province’s key areas of Vinh City and Cua Lo Township while directly improving the living conditions of the local people. An environmentally sound landfill will be designed for Vinh and Cua Lo, and the human capacity developed to manage the landfill in a proper way. It is expected to benefit the urban poor most, many of whom make their living by collecting recyclable waste. The project will work to improve waste collection services for a healthier urban environment. The pilot project in Nghe An is expected to be a model for all Viet Nam in managing solid waste and improving health care. Viet Nam is facing a growing need for proper collection and disposal of solid waste and health care waste, especially in urban areas. Currently, most localities can properly dispose of only a tiny percentage of their total waste because they lack efficient facilities. This support project is part of Danish Environmental Assistance to Viet Nam. Increasing attention is being focused on urban environmental improvements, with communities being more directly involved in improving their quality of life. — VNS
