Study on dolphins

KUCHING (NST) - The State Forestry and Wildlife Department will conduct a study on the population of dolphins and their habitat in an effort to protect the mammal, assistant director Oswald Bracken said.

The study will be carried out at the end of the year as there has been a sizeable number of dolphins spotted especially off the coast of Santubong.

A survey was conducted by the department with a research team from University Malaysia Sabah in November last year.

As a result of the survey, the research team came up with an inventory on dolphins.

Bracken said information on the habitat of dolphins had been given to the UMS team as they were also conducting a study on the mammals found in Borneo.

The second stage of the study will concentrate on conservation efforts as well as determining the population.
