Steps taken to protect turtle eggs I REFER to the letter, 'Ensure turtle eggs hatch safely', by Mr Chong Yew Cheong (ST, Aug 14). We are delighted with the discovery of the newly-laid hawksbill eggs on Jurong Island and would like to assure Mr Chong that we have already taken steps to ensure that the turtle eggs will hatch safely here. As Mr Chong has highlighted correctly, the turtles are an endangered species and, hence, conservation efforts of the turtle eggs have been handed over to the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) and the Underwater World Singapore (UWS). A marine-turtle research scientist from Nanyang Technological University is also working closely with AVA and UWS in the turtle rescue work. Meanwhile, JTC has also put up a sign at the site advising the public to keep away as conservation work is in progress.
